Edmeades' Zinfandel 2007 is a rich wine that captures a cornucopia of berries—cherries, raspberries, and hints of blackberries. There’s a bit of peppery spices nuanced with a bit of Syrah and Petite Sirah thrown in to compliment its fervent, spirited flavor. This complex ruby-colored wine has an oaky creaminess that is a bit different from the previous year’s vintage that was rated 90 points in Wine Spectator. This year’s debut Zin is luscious and perfect for pairing with steak. A bit pricey—the $20 price tag may be more than you want to spend, but discount warehouses sell it for around $15—try it, it’s worth it.
Next up is George Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau—a remarkable Beaujolais. The release of its annual vintage is the same day each year—the third Thursday of November. You’ve probably seen its floral label design displayed in your grocery store in various ways (on a VW Beetle and such), and its release is highly anticipated. Sixty-five million bottles are shipped all over the world for immediate consumption, the practice stems from a long tradition that began in small villages in France way back when. The 2008 has light and fruity (sweet and tart) flavors. There’s a slight herbaceous touch intermingling with its essence and if you like a finish that finishes (no long lingering of aftertaste here!), you’ll love this light red. Made from 100% Gamay grapes, a thin-skinned grape with lower tannins, it’s a fantastic light red. For $12 a bottle and on sale from time to time for $8.99, this Beaujolais is outstanding.
Middle Sister, a spicy little white is a combination of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer grapes. It’s a new wine created by a female wine promoter and exec in California and being a middle sister, this writer couldn’t resist. Its flavor is punchy and bold. The taste is a shock of melons, pears and flowery inflections and is best served cold. It has a lingering metallic sweetness to it, and for those who like a sweet, sassy wine, and want to explore their feminine side, this one’s a good choice. Plus, for every bottle sold, a dime goes to female-focused charities. Great with fish, chicken and appetizers, and with a $12 price tag, this rebellious little white is sure to please.
Whether it's an intimate get-together or a large dinner party, these wines will satisfy the most picky aficionados!
